Most of what BLM asks here comes down to where you ride and what you leave alone.
BLM's rules and requests
- Cross-country travel only inside the fenced open dune area
- Outside it, stay on designated routes marked with white arrows or white paint
- Keep your distance from desert bighorn sheep
- Give the cottonwood trees a wide berth
- Respect private property
- Stay clear of oil production facilities and ranches

Utah OHV law
- A red or orange whip flag on OHVs in sand dune areas
- Helmets for riders under 18 on public land
- A muffler with an approved spark arrestor
- Lights between sunset and sunrise
- No riding under the influence

Certificates and permits
Utah has required every OHV operator 18 or older to complete the free Utah Off-Highway Vehicle Education Course since January 1, 2023. Riders under 18 need an approved youth certificate and direct adult supervision. Out-of-state machines need a $35 non-resident permit, valid 12 months and bought online.
