Each appears on one page and is identified as an illustration. These conceptual scenes are not documentary views, campsite diagrams or navigation maps. Historical scenes are interpretations; documentary photographs are credited separately below.

Each photograph was checked against its source page for subject, photographer and license before it was placed. Creative Commons attribution and share-alike terms stay attached to each work, and resized copies are marked as changed.

How photographs are chosen

Only licenses that allow commercial use are accepted: public domain, CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA. A photograph has to show the place it sits beside. Where no rights-cleared photograph of a place exists, the page goes without one rather than borrowing a picture of somewhere else.
